The United Kingdom has officially awarded approximately £380 million ($509.54 million) in funding to Agratas, the battery division of India-based Tata Group, to bolster the domestic production of electric vehicle batteries. According to the government-backed Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), this investment is a critical component of a broader £470 million grant package designed to support the transition to zero-emission transport and strengthen national supply chains.

The funding is specifically earmarked for the development of a new gigafactory in Somerset, which is projected to be the largest facility of its kind in the country. Once operational, the plant is expected to have a production capacity of about 40 gigawatt-hours. Originally proposed by the Department for Business and Trade last year, the project aims to provide a steady supply of batteries for Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors, while potentially serving other automotive manufacturers in the future.
