Uganda proposes new railway connection to Tanzania for mineral exports

Uganda is planning a new railway link to Tanzania to open an export route for minerals like gold. The African Development Bank may provide project funding.

The Ugandan Ministry of Works and Transport announced on February 23, 2026, plans to link the nation's new Uganda Standard Gauge Railway project to the under-construction railway network in Tanzania TZTZ. The initiative is designed to establish a vital export route to the Port of Dar es Salaam, providing an alternative corridor to the Port of Mombasa in Kenya KEKE.
