Uber invests 1.25 billion dollars in Rivian robotaxi deal

Uber Technologies, Inc. has announced a strategic investment of up to $1.25 billion in electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive, Inc. as part of an agreement to deploy 10,000 fully autonomous R2 SUVs as robotaxis starting in 2028. The San Francisco-based ride-hailing giant will provide an initial $300 million investment, with the remaining capital to be distributed through 2031 contingent on Rivian meeting specific autonomous technology milestones. Interest in driverless transportation has intensified as artificial intelligence and technical collaborations aim to address complex urban traffic and reduce operational costs. While Rivian is recognized for its high-end R1S SUVs and R1T pickup trucks, the company recently introduced a custom computer chip designed for self-driving capabilities and is preparing to launch its more affordable R2 SUV line this quarter. The partnership enters a competitive field where Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Waymo has already deployed approximately 2,500 robotaxis across several cities. Additionally, Tesla, Inc. has initiated a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, with plans for rapid expansion throughout the year. Under the terms of the deal, the R2 robotaxis will be available exclusively on the Uber platform, initially launching in San Francisco and Miami. Uber also maintains an option to purchase up to 40,000 additional units starting in 2030. If all performance targets are met, the companies intend to deploy thousands of unsupervised Rivian vehicles across 25 cities throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe by the end of 2031. Uber is positioning its platform as a broad marketplace for various autonomous vehicle operators. Beyond its new tie-up with Rivian, the company has established partnerships with other industry players, including Lucid Group, Inc. and Baidu. Furthermore, it is collaborating with NVIDIA Corporation to utilize advanced AI and simulation platforms to scale its robotaxi operations.
