Bessent Says China Will Help Reopen Strait of Hormuz
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says China will likely use its influence with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He noted the move is in Beijing's interest.
United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said China will likely pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Bessent told CNBC on Thursday that reopening the waterway is in the best interest of Beijing. He believes Chinese officials will work behind the scenes to influence Iranian leadership, "to the extent anyone has any say over the Iranian leadership."
The Treasury Secretary spoke from Beijing during an official visit with President Donald Trump. Bessent noted that China maintains leverage as a primary buyer of Iranian exports and expects the Chinese government to use its diplomatic weight to restore shipping through the critical corridor.
