US Customs Reports Progress on Tariff Refund System
U.S. Customs officials told a court on Thursday that the system for refunding $166 billion in illegal tariff payments is between 40 and 80 percent complete.
The United States government is advancing a multi-stage system to refund approximately $166 billion in illegal tariff payments, including interest. According to a court filing submitted on Thursday by a high-ranking customs official, the infrastructure required to facilitate these payments is currently between 40% and 80% complete.

Brandon Lord, an official representing U.S. Customs and Border Protection, explained that the agency is currently developing a four-part system known as CAPE. This specialized platform is designed to manage the high volume of claims by automating the acceptance, mass processing, review, and final issuance of refunds to eligible parties. The progress report was filed with the U.S. Court of International Trade to satisfy a recent order from Judge Richard Eaton, who directed the agency to begin the reimbursement process following legal challenges to the tariffs.
