Futures for Canada's primary stock index declined on Friday morning, positioning the market for its third consecutive weekly loss. Cautious sentiment prevails as investors track the intensifying conflict in the Middle East, which has driven energy prices to historic highs. June futures on the S&P/TSX composite index dropped 0.5% as of early Friday, mirroring a downward trend in Wall Street's main indexes.

Reports from Axios indicate that the United States is evaluating strategies to blockade Iran's Kharg Island. This move aims to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz following recent military exchanges between Israel and Iranian forces. In response to the instability, a coalition including Japan, Canada, and major European powers issued a joint statement expressing readiness to protect international shipping lanes.

The price of Brent Crude Oil has surged by more than 50% since the start of the regional conflict. While this rally has bolstered Canadian energy equities by approximately 38% this year, the broader domestic market remains vulnerable to price swings given that oil is one of the country's largest exports. The S&P/TSX Composite Index concluded Thursday at its lowest point since late January, marking a total retreat of over 7% since the start of the hostilities.

In the commodities sector, metal prices showed mixed results. Gold remained muted while silver dipped nearly 2%. These resources are critical components of the resource-heavy Canadian index. Regarding monetary policy, the Bank of Canada and other global peers maintained interest rates at current levels this week. However, policymakers emphasized their readiness to implement further hikes if inflationary pressures re-emerge.

In specific equity movements, CIBC updated its outlook on Interfor Corporation, raising the lumber producer to neutral from underperform. Conversely, the brokerage lowered its rating for AutoCanada Inc. to neutral from outperform.
