TSX Futures Edge Higher as Gold Gains Amid Iran Tensions
TSX futures rose on Tuesday as gold prices climbed after Iran rejected a U.S. proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Investors also await Canadian PMI data.
Futures for the resource-heavy stock index in Canada edged higher on Tuesday as investors reacted to rising commodity prices and shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East. June futures on the S&P/TSX index rose 0.1% in early morning trading, building on the momentum from the previous session.
The market sentiment was heavily influenced by developments involving Iran, which recently rejected a proposal from the United States for an immediate ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The rejection came ahead of a deadline set by the American administration. Tehran's counter-proposal reportedly included ten specific clauses, such as the cessation of regional conflicts, the establishment of safe passage protocols through the Strait, and the removal of economic sanctions.
Safe-haven assets saw increased demand amid the uncertainty. Gold prices climbed 0.9%, while Silver gained 0.3%. Industrial commodities also saw upward movement, with Copper prices supported by expectations of strong demand from China.
In the energy markets, Brent Crude Oil futures pulled back slightly from session highs to trade near $110 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude maintained a position above $112.
Domestic investors are also awaiting the release of the Ivey Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) data for March. This report will provide a clearer picture of the economic health in the region following Monday's close, where the benchmark index hit a nearly four-week high on optimistic hopes for a resolution to Middle Eastern tensions.
