Trump signs executive order expanding sanctions on Cuba
President Trump signed an order expanding sanctions on Cuba to target its security apparatus. The measure includes secondary sanctions and follows recent U.S. actions.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday broadening United States sanctions against the Cuba government and its security apparatus. The order authorizes secondary sanctions on entities facilitating transactions with Havana, following the February 28 conflict with Iran. The administration is targeting Havana following the ousting of leadership in Venezuela.
White House officials told Reuters the sanctions target individuals and entities complicit in corruption or human rights violations. The order also applies to agents and supporters of the Cuban security apparatus. It was not immediately clear what people or entities were hit with sanctions under the order.
