Trump and Xi reach modest trade deals at Beijing summit
President Trump and Xi Jinping concluded Beijing talks with modest results. The summit produced a Boeing jet deal but left long-term trade disputes unaddressed.
United States President Donald Trump concluded a two-day summit in China with an unconfirmed aircraft order and a return to strategic stability. Trump said Boeing had sealed a deal for China to purchase 200 jets. The figure falls below the 300 units Beijing agreed to purchase during his 2017 visit. Investors face a prolonged stalemate as both nations prioritize domestic economic resilience over fundamental trade or geopolitical concessions.
President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping established a framework of "constructive strategic stability" during meetings on Thursday and Friday. This shift marks a retreat from the aggressive trade tactics of early 2025, when tariffs reached 145%. Scott Kennedy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies said the relationship has reverted to a more predictable standoff.
