The United States federal government conducted its most successful auction of oil and gas drilling rights in the history of Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve on Wednesday. The sale generated $163 million in winning bids from major industry participants, signaling a robust return of interest to the region after a hiatus of more than six years in federal leasing.

Prominent energy firms secured significant acreage during the event, including ConocoPhillips, Repsol, S.A., and Shell plc. ExxonMobil and North Slope Exploration LLC also emerged as top winners in the bidding process. According to preliminary data from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the industry submitted 430 bids covering approximately 200 of the 600 tracts offered, totaling 1.3 million acres of the 5.5 million acres available. Repsol and Shell submitted joint bids on numerous tracts, successfully acquiring several of them.

BLM Alaska State Director Kevin Pendergast highlighted the significance of the auction results during a livestreamed announcement.

The results of todays sale are historic. It makes clear that for the NPR-A, despite all the successes to date, the best days are still ahead.

The auction marks the first of at least five sales mandated under the tax cut and spending legislation signed into law by the Trump administration last year. This move aligns with federal efforts to expand domestic energy production and reverse Biden-era restrictions on drilling within the 23-million-acre reserve. Originally designated in the 1970s to mitigate energy shortages, the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) is estimated to contain 8.7 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

While Alaska state officials and some native groups support the expansion of drilling for its potential to generate tax revenue and employment, the move faces opposition from environmental advocates. Critics argue that industrial development in the remote region threatens critical habitats for species such as polar bears and caribou. The previous NPR-A lease sale in 2019 yielded only $11.3 million in bids, highlighting the sharp increase in demand during this latest federal auction.
