TikTok Applies for Credit and Payment Licenses in Brazil
TikTok is seeking licenses from Brazil's central bank to offer credit and payments. The move aims to expand financial services for its 131 million local users.
The social media platform TikTok, which is controlled by the firm ByteDance, is actively seeking authorization from the central bank of Brazil to operate as a fintech provider for lending and payments. Sources familiar with the confidential plans indicate that the company has applied for two specific licenses to expand its functional capabilities within the South American market.
One license would authorize TikTok to act as an electronic money issuer, enabling the platform to offer prepaid accounts where users can hold balances and process payments. The second license would establish the company as a direct credit entity. This specific classification allows a fintech to lend its own capital or serve as a bridge between borrowers and lenders without accepting public deposits. This strategy mirrors the growth path of established digital financial institutions like Nu Holdings Ltd., which currently leads the digital banking sector in the region.
