Tesla Model Y Is First to Pass New NHTSA Safety Tests
The 2026 Tesla Model Y is the first vehicle to pass new US driver-assistance tests. These tests include pedestrian braking and lane keeping assistance features.
TESLA INC became the first automaker to pass the United States government's new advanced driver-assistance system safety tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) added these pass/fail requirements to its New Car Assessment Program for 2026 models. The 2026 Model Y vehicles manufactured on or after November 12, 2025, successfully completed the new evaluation.
NHTSA approved these tests in November 2024 following a mandate from Congress. The tests cover pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention.
