The electric vehicle manufacturer TESLA INC reported a second consecutive quarter of sales growth for its vehicles produced in China, demonstrating resilience in a market characterized by intensifying competition. According to data released by the China Passenger Car Association, the company sold 85,670 Model 3 and Model Y cars from its Shanghai factory in March, an 8.7% increase from the same period last year. This result marks the fifth consecutive month of rising sales, a trend bolstered by recovering demand across Europe.

During the first three months of the year, sales for the United States-based firm rose by 23.5% year-on-year, showing a significant acceleration compared to the 1.9% growth recorded in the fourth quarter. Analysts anticipate that global deliveries for the first quarter will rebound by nearly 10%, overcoming a previous downturn that some attributed to consumer reactions to executive leadership. Market experts also noted that rising global oil prices, exacerbated by the geopolitical situation in Iran, could further incentivize the shift toward electric mobility.

Despite these gains, the automaker is grappling with a shrinking market share in several regions. Its portion of the Chinese electric vehicle market fell to 8% in 2024, down from 10% previously, while it also lost nearly half of its market share in Europe last year. Its primary rival, BYD CO LTD -A, remains a formidable competitor, applying consistent pressure in both domestic and European markets. While the competitor has seen strong overseas expansion, it has faced its own difficulties maintaining growth within the local Chinese market.

In response to these market shifts, the company is expanding its focus beyond traditional vehicle manufacturing. It is currently positioning humanoid robots, autonomous robotaxis, and solar energy as the core pillars of its future growth strategy. Recent reports suggest the firm is in discussions with local suppliers to secure $2.9 billion in solar equipment as it diversifies its technological portfolio.
