Suncor to shift oil sands production to in situ by 2040

Suncor Energy will transition 60% of its output to steam-assisted extraction by 2040 as its Base Plant mine nears depletion. The move aims to increase cash flow.

Suncor Energy Inc. has announced a significant strategic pivot, planning to transition the majority of its bitumen production to steam-assisted extraction technologies by 2040. This structural shift within Canada is intended to drive lower operating costs and generate higher long-term cash flow as the company moves away from traditional mining methods.

At present, approximately 70% of the company's oil sands crude is sourced from large-scale mining operations in northern Alberta, where heavy bitumen is extracted using trucks and shovels. The remaining 30% is produced via in situ methods, which utilize steam to loosen deeper deposits so they can be pumped to the surface. CEO Rich Kruger informed investors that this production mix will undergo a reversal over the next 15 years, resulting in a 60% share for in situ developments and 40% for mining by 2040.
