Republican commentator Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra have taken the lead in the California primary for governor. With over 70 percent of precincts reporting, both candidates are positioned to advance to the general election as billionaire Tom Steyer trails in third place.

Steve Hilton and Xavier Becerra took early leads in the United States California gubernatorial primary on Tuesday evening, June 2, securing 26.9% and 25.8% of the vote respectively. With 73.4% of precincts partially reporting, the two frontrunners appear positioned to advance to the November general election under the state's jungle primary system. Official results showed Hilton leading with approximately 1.1 million votes. Becerra trailed by 46,000 votes, while billionaire Tom Steyer sat in third place with 19.7% of the total. No other candidates in the field of dozens reached 10% of the vote.
