Spanish Group Challenges Volotea Over Fuel Surcharges
Spanish group Facua has requested an investigation into Volotea's fuel surcharges. The group argues that the pricing policy violates consumer protection laws.
The Spanish consumer rights organization Facua has formally requested an investigation into the pricing strategies of the low-cost carrier Volotea. The group is challenging a new policy that links ticket prices to fluctuating fuel costs, which can result in a post-purchase surcharge of up to 14 euros ($16.5) per passenger. Volotea, which operates out of the Asturias region in Spain, implemented this temporary measure on March 16 following a sharp rise in energy prices.
The surge in oil and jet fuel costs was triggered by the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. According to Facua, Volotea is the first carrier in the country to introduce such surcharges. The consumer group has urged the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to review the policy, suggesting it may contravene consumer protection regulations that forbid price adjustments after a ticket has been purchased.
