South Sudan President Salva Kiir dismisses finance minister after three months in office
President Salva Kiir fired Finance Minister Bak Barnaba Chol on Monday. Salvatore Garang returns as the nation sees its ninth finance chief since 2020.
President Salva Kiir of South Sudan
SS has dismissed Finance Minister Bak Barnaba Chol after only three months in the position, appointing Salvatore Garang as his replacement. The decision was announced on state television by the Office of the President on February 24, 2026, as part of a broader government reshuffle. This move marks the ninth time the leadership of the Ministry of Finance has changed since 2020, continuing a period of high turnover for the office responsible for the country’s public finances.
The reshuffle also included the removal of several other senior officials, most notably the commissioner general of the National Revenue Authority. These changes, which involve key figures such as Athian Diing Athian, represent a significant reorganization of the leadership overseeing South Sudan’s revenue and fiscal management. While the administrative changes are internal, the regional environment involving Sudan
SD provides the broader context for the nation’s ongoing governance efforts.
