South Korea is reviewing a phased contribution to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz following high-level defense talks in the United States. The proposal follows an attack on a South Korean-flagged cargo ship near the critical energy chokepoint last week. Any disruption to the Strait threatens global energy supply chains.
Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back outlined the proposal during a press conference in Washington on Wednesday. He conveyed the position to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth during their meeting on Monday afternoon.
