The South African rand strengthened in early trading on Monday, bolstered by a broad rally in commodity prices as global investors monitored escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. At 0654 GMT, the currency was trading at 17.0525 against the U.S. dollar, marking a 0.4% appreciation from its previous close. South Africa has remained resilient despite global volatility, largely due to its status as a major exporter of raw materials. While gold prices edged higher as the greenback softened, further gains were limited by rising energy costs which have intensified global inflation concerns. > "South Africa is benefiting from being a commodity exporter in a world where commodity prices are rising broadly," said Andre Cilliers, currency strategist at TreasuryONE. The energy sector has seen significant movement, with Brent Crude Oil climbing above $115 per barrel. This surge follows reports that Houthi rebels in Yemen launched attacks against Israel over the weekend, a development that has widened the regional conflict and added pressure to global supply chains. Technical analysis suggests that since oil has surpassed the $114.80 resistance level, the next target could be as high as $127 per barrel. Cilliers warned that sustained strength in oil prices at those levels might eventually undermine the rally in precious metals that has provided a protective buffer for the rand. On the domestic front, recent data from the South African Reserve Bank indicated that M3 money supply growth reached 8.39% in February, up from 7.44% in January. Additionally, private sector credit growth for February was recorded at 10.50%, exceeding the previous month's figure of 8.83%. In the fixed-income market, the benchmark 2035 government bond showed signs of weakness. The yield on the instrument rose by 5 basis points to reach 9.19% during early deals.
