Eskom Cuts Power Tariffs for Major Ferrochrome Producers
Eskom cut electricity prices by 29% for two distressed ferrochrome firms to prevent job losses. The new tariff applies to Samancor Chrome and Glencore-Merafe.
In an effort to protect industrial employment, the state power utility in South Africa has implemented a significant reduction in electricity costs for major ferrochrome producers. Eskom announced on Friday that it would slash tariffs by 29% for two distressed mining operations, aiming to prevent the loss of thousands of jobs within the sector. The revised pricing structure benefits Samancor Chrome and the joint venture operated by Glencore plc alongside Merafe Resources Limited. Under the new arrangement, these companies will pay 62 South African cents per kilowatt hour. This represents a substantial decrease from the interim tariff of 87.74 cents per kilowatt hour that was initially approved by the national energy regulator in January. The decision comes as the ferrochrome industry faces severe financial pressure due to fluctuating global demand and high operational costs. By lowering the energy burden, authorities hope to stabilize the operations of these key industrial players and maintain the country's position in the global ferrochrome market.
