CHARGE launches off grid EV charging on N3 corridor
Zero Carbon Charge has launched the first of two solar-powered charging stations along the Johannesburg-Durban route to address grid constraints. The firm plans to install 60 off-grid sites by late 2027 as South African electric vehicle sales continue to rise.
Zero Carbon Charge launched the first of two off-grid, solar-powered charging stations along the Johannesburg-to-Durban N3 corridor in South Africa. The rollout supports accelerating electric vehicle adoption despite national grid constraints. Off-grid infrastructure decouples EV charging from the country's volatile and aging power utility, Eskom.
### Bypassing the National Grid The new stations operate entirely independent of the national power utility. This strategy addresses energy insecurity caused by aging infrastructure, transmission bottlenecks, and recurring power cuts that limit the grid's ability to handle a surge in charging demand.
