Soaring cucumber prices spark political outcry across Russia as inflation hits food staples

Prices for the staple have doubled since December, prompting officials to demand answers. Consumers are frustrated by rising costs as the economy slows.

The anti-monopoly regulator in Russia RURU has launched a formal inquiry into the doubling of cucumber prices since December, as the cost of the vegetable reaches an average of just over 300 roubles per kilogram. In some regions, retail listings are reportedly two to three times higher than this average. The regulator has requested detailed explanations from both producers and retailers to determine the cause of the sharp spike, which remains an ongoing concern for the national market.
This price increase is occurring against a backdrop of rising inflation, where overall consumer prices have climbed 2.1% since the start of the year. Analysts note that this rise is partly linked to a VAT increase and coincides with a broader economic slowdown after four years of war. The central bank and the Ministry of Agriculture are monitoring the situation as the government faces mounting pressure to address the cost-of-living crisis.
