Samsung Union Members Vote on May Strike Over Pay Demands
Samsung union members are voting on an 18-day strike starting May 21 over pay. The move could disrupt chip output as workers seek better wages and bonuses.
The largest labor union at Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in South Korea has warned of potential disruptions to the global semiconductor supply chain as members vote on a strike planned for May. A walkout at the world's largest memory chip manufacturer could exacerbate existing bottlenecks in the supply of semiconductors, which are currently in high demand for artificial intelligence data center operations.
Choi Seung-ho, leader of the Samsung Electronics Labour Union (SELU), indicated that if workers fail to reach an agreement with management, they plan to strike for 18 days starting May 21. This action could impact approximately half of the production output at the company's major semiconductor complex in Pyeongtaek.
