The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices extended their recent gains on Wednesday as investors shifted focus toward corporate earnings and signs of diplomatic progress in the Middle East. Market sentiment in the United States improved on reports that Washington and Iran might resume negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict, which has previously unsettled oil markets and interest-rate expectations. The S&P 500 moved closer to record territory, reflecting investor willingness to embrace risk at the prospect of de-escalation.

Shay Boloor, chief market strategist at Futurum Equities, highlighted the market's forward-looking nature regarding the geopolitical situation:

"The markets dont need a finished deal to rally. All they need is evidence that talks will happen."
"They are willing to digest all of this overseas heartburn because AI is so real and the rate of change is so exponential that its too egregious to be on the sidelines and not participate."

By midday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 189.47 points, or 0.39%, to 48,346.52. In contrast, the S&P 500 rose 30.48 points, or 0.44%, to 6,997.86, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 246.98 points, or 1.05%, to 23,886.07. Advancing issues matched decliners on the NYSE, while gainers led on the Nasdaq by a 1.2-to-1 ratio. The S&P 500 recorded 10 new 52-week highs, and the Nasdaq Composite saw 75 new highs.

Financial stocks provided significant support, with the S&P 500 financial index gaining 0.6%. BANK OF AMERICA CORP saw its shares increase by 1.9% after reporting profit growth for the first quarter. MORGAN STANLEY also performed well, with its shares rising 4.4% following a jump in quarterly earnings. The technology sector remained a primary driver of the rally, with the S&P 500 information technology index gaining 1.5%. Quantum computing companies saw particularly strong interest from investors. RIGETTI COMPUTING INC surged 11.8%, D-WAVE QUANTUM INC rose 15.9%, and ARQIT QUANTUM INC added 18.8%.

In broader corporate news, BROADCOM INC advanced 3.1% after META PLATFORMS INC-CLASS A extended its partnership for custom chips. SNAP INC - A shares rose nearly 8% despite the company's decision to reduce its workforce by approximately 1,000 employees. ALLBIRDS INC-CL A experienced a massive surge, with its stock price increasing more than eightfold following a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Market volatility eased as the CBOE volatility index dropped to 18.06. However, performance across sectors was mixed; six of the 11 S&P 500 sector indexes posted losses, with the materials sector leading the decline with a 1.4% drop.
