Officials offer Putin economic plans after contraction
Russian officials presented growth proposals to President Putin after an early 2026 contraction. The Kremlin said the plans aim to restore economic momentum.
Top economic officials in Russia have presented a series of strategic proposals to President Vladimir Putin aimed at stimulating economic growth. This move follows a direct critique from the President regarding a contraction observed during the first two months of 2026. While the Russian war economy showed resilience by growing between 2023 and 2025 and consistently outperforming the G7 average, a recent slowdown has prompted concerns. During a high-level meeting on Wednesday, Putin characterized the current economic trajectory as falling below expectations and requested comprehensive options to address the downturn.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the discussions lasted several hours and involved a candid dialogue among the nation's most influential economic figures. > The members of the governments economic bloc have many proposals to activate the economy and give it greater momentum. Although Peskov did not disclose specific details of the proposed measures, analysts suggest the domestic economy has likely been bolstered by the rising global costs of energy. Prices for Brent Crude Oil and Natural Gas have surged recently, a trend largely attributed to geopolitical tensions following attacks by the United States and Israel on targets within Iran. The Kremlin's economic bloc is now tasked with refining these proposals to ensure the momentum seen in previous years is restored, despite the challenging international landscape.
