Russian LNG Tanker Reroutes After Attack Off Libya
A Russian gas carrier diverted from the Mediterranean to sail around Africa after a similar vessel sank off Libya. Moscow blames a drone strike for the loss.
A tanker transporting liquefied natural gas from the sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 facility in Russia has altered its course, diverting from the Mediterranean Sea to navigate around the African continent. This decision follows a maritime attack that resulted in the sinking of a similar vessel off the coast of Libya earlier this week.
According to ship-tracking data from the London Stock Exchange Group plc, the tanker, identified as the Buran, changed its trajectory following the destruction of the Arctic Metagaz on Wednesday. The vessel is currently positioned off the northwest coast of Africa. Moscow has characterized the sinking of the Arctic Metagaz as an act of terrorism, alleging that Ukraine deployed naval drones launched from Libyan territory to carry out the strike.
