Mind Robotics, a startup spun out of electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive, Inc., has secured $500 million in a Series A funding round. This investment, co-led by Accel and Andreessen Horowitz, values the industrial robotics firm at $2 billion. The capital injection marks one of the largest Series A rounds in the robotics sector, occurring as global manufacturers face persistent labor shortages and the need to modernize legacy production infrastructure. Headquartered in Palo Alto, Mind Robotics is developing a comprehensive platform that integrates foundation models, specialized robots, and deployment infrastructure. The goal is to automate large-scale industrial and manufacturing operations. As part of the financing agreement, Accel partner Sameer Gandhi will join the company’s board of directors. This latest round follows a $115 million seed investment led by Eclipse Capital late last year. Founded by RJ Scaringe, who also serves as the CEO of Rivian Automotive, Inc., Mind Robotics was officially spun off in November. The electric vehicle maker remains a significant shareholder and strategic partner, providing the startup with critical training data and a real-world environment to test and deploy its technology. Unlike the humanoid robots being developed by Tesla, Inc. or the NVIDIA Corporation-backed Figure AI, Mind Robotics is prioritizing traditional factory robot designs. The startup intends to bridge the automation gap by creating machines capable of human-like dexterity and physical reasoning without necessarily adopting a human form factor. Despite the influx of capital, industry experts suggest that the path to commercializing advanced robotics remains complex. The development of foundation models requires massive datasets, which are difficult to acquire at scale. Scaringe has emphasized that the company's focus will remain on practical industrial applications rather than the high-profile humanoid designs that have recently dominated headlines.
