Iran War Fuel Costs Force Global Aid Reductions
The Norwegian Refugee Council reports that surging energy prices are making aid operations more expensive. Fewer people will receive help as costs rise globally.
The global humanitarian landscape is facing a severe crisis as the ongoing conflict involving Iran drives energy prices to unsustainable levels, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). Based in Norway, the aid organization warned that the rising cost of fuel and food is significantly reducing the number of displaced people who can receive life-saving assistance.
Jan Egeland, the Secretary-General of the NRC and former United Nations humanitarian chief, highlighted the direct impact of market volatility on field operations. The surge in prices for Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil has doubled the cost of operating the organization's fleet of 1,500 diesel vehicles in several regions.
