Rio Tinto Starts 1.5 Billion Dollar Smelter Expansion
The Anglo-Australian mining giant expects the Arvida expansion to reach full capacity by the end of 2026. This project uses low-carbon AP60 technology powered by hydropower to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Canada is also investing 100 million dollars to support the deployment of carbon-free electrolysis.

RIO TINTO PLC began commissioning a $1.5 billion low-carbon aluminum smelter expansion in Quebec. The project adds 160,000 metric tonnes of annual capacity using AP60 smelting technology. This expansion maintains Quebec's role as the producer of nearly half of Rio Tinto's global aluminum output.
