RBI Governor Says India Forex Reserves Remain Sufficient
Governor Sanjay Malhotra says India forex reserves of 697.1 billion dollars are sufficient. He expects trade deals to improve current and capital accounts.
The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Sanjay Malhotra, stated on Wednesday that the foreign exchange reserves of India remain at a sufficient level and do not represent a cause for concern. This announcement comes despite recent anxieties regarding capital outflows that could potentially impact the central bank's dollar holdings. According to the most recent data, reserves climbed to $697.1 billion as of April 3, an increase from $688.06 billion recorded the previous week.
While the reserves have dipped from a record high of $728.49 billion seen in late February, the decline is primarily linked to central bank interventions to stabilize the rupee against pressures from the conflict in the Middle East. Furthermore, a decrease in the market value of Gold has also contributed to the reduction in the total value of the reserves. Malhotra emphasized that the current holdings provide a buffer for at least 11 months of imports.
