Carney Targets US Trade Deal After Election Majority
Prime Minister Mark Carney is using his majority to seek a U.S. trade deal while addressing tariffs. He aims to tackle domestic inflation and economic growth.
Following a decisive majority victory in recent special elections, Prime Minister Mark Carney is pivoting toward his administration's most significant diplomatic hurdle: renegotiating trade relations with the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump. The government in Canada now faces a critical July 1 deadline to reach an agreement with the U.S. and Mexico to maintain the current trade framework, which protects the majority of Canadian exports from American tariffs.
Carney is expected to leverage his new parliamentary mandate to push for a revised deal this year that addresses punitive tariffs affecting key industrial sectors. This includes concerns for domestic steel production led by firms like ALGOMA STEEL GROUP INC, aluminum producers such as ALCOA CORP, and the deeply integrated automotive supply chain involving MAGNA INTERNATIONAL INC, GENERAL MOTORS CO, FORD MOTOR CO, and STELLANTIS NV.
