Malawi Aims to Reduce Inflation Below 21 Percent
President Peter Mutharika told parliament on Friday that the government targets 3.8 percent growth in 2026. Efforts continue to stabilize the nation's economy.
The government of Malawi is intensifying efforts to stabilize its economy, with a primary goal of reducing annual inflation to below 21% within the current year. President Peter Mutharika announced the target during an address to parliament on Friday, highlighting the administration's focus on reversing a prolonged period of fiscal instability.
Currently, the Southern African nation is grappling with a year-on-year inflation rate of 26%. Consumer prices have remained stubbornly above the 20% threshold since mid-2022, creating significant pressure on households and businesses alike. Mutharika, who secured the presidency in September on a platform of economic revitalization, is now tasked with addressing the systemic issues that have plagued the donor-dependent country for years.
