Philippines to Allow Spanish Pork Imports From ASF-Free Zones
The Philippines has agreed to a regionalization approach for Spanish pork imports following a ban triggered by African swine fever cases in wild boar last year. Spanish Agriculture Minister Luis Planas noted that no pig farms were affected by the outbreaks centered near Barcelona.
The Philippines will resume pork imports from Spain regions unaffected by African swine fever (ASF), ending a nationwide ban. Spain's first ASF detection in over 30 years occurred in late 2025. The reopening secures a critical export channel for the European Union's largest pork producer.
### Regionalization Strategy Protects Trade Spanish Agriculture Minister Luis Planas confirmed the agreement on Friday, describing the Philippines as a strategic market. Spain has actively lobbied non-EU trade partners to adopt regionalization, a framework where trade restrictions apply only to specific infected zones rather than entire countries. China was among the first major importers to accept this localized approach.
