Peru Taps Fuel Reserves Following Gas Pipeline Rupture
Peru is drawing on fuel reserves and ordering remote work after a pipeline rupture cut gas supplies. The outage has halted 70% of domestic LPG production.
The government of Peru has announced it will draw on strategic fuel reserves to protect the domestic energy supply after a major pipeline rupture caused the most severe energy crisis in two decades. Prime Minister Denisse Miralles stated on Friday that the emergency measures are necessary to manage the fallout from the infrastructure failure, which has already led to the suspension of natural gas exports.
To reduce the burden on the national power grid, the administration is urging public and private-sector employees to work remotely, while schools are being moved to online learning formats. The crisis began on Sunday when a rupture in the Megantoni district choked energy supplies, leading to a significant power crunch across the nation.
