Local energy sources reduce Pakistan LNG supply risks
Local sources now provide 74% of Pakistan's power according to Minister Awais Leghari. This shift protects the grid from global LNG supply risks and shortages.
Pakistan has significantly bolstered its energy security by increasing its reliance on domestic power sources, effectively cushioning the nation against potential global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply disruptions. Power Minister Awais Leghari told Reuters that the country’s strategic shift toward solar, wind, nuclear, coal, and hydropower has reduced its vulnerability to external shocks.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East poses a threat to shipments from Qatar, the world’s second-largest producer behind the United States. Qatar currently supplies the majority of the imported LNG used by Pakistani power plants to meet peak electricity demand.
