NY Man Convicted for Operating Secret Chinese Police Site
A federal jury found Lu Jianwang guilty of acting as an unregistered agent for Beijing in Manhattan. He faces up to 30 years for his role in the operation.
A jury found Lu Jianwang, a naturalized U.S. citizen, guilty of acting as an unregistered agent of China for operating a secret police station. Lu faces up to 30 years in prison following a weeklong trial in United States federal court. The verdict signals intensified federal scrutiny of transnational repression and foreign influence operations within American borders.
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn said Lu helped open the facility in 2022 without notifying the U.S. Attorney General. They alleged he also assisted the Chinese government in locating a pro-democracy activist in California. Lu pleaded not guilty to three felony charges: conspiracy to act as an unregistered foreign agent, acting as an unregistered agent of China, and obstruction of justice.
