NY Democrats Move to Redraw 2028 Congressional Map
Democratic lawmakers in New York have advanced a constitutional amendment that would allow the legislature to bypass an independent redistricting commission. The proposal aims to remove the state ban on partisan gerrymandering and could potentially add four House seats for the party by the 2028 election cycle.
New York Democrats advanced a constitutional amendment Wednesday evening, June 3, to redraw the state’s congressional map for the 2028 election cycle. The measure allows lawmakers to bypass an independent commission to potentially secure four additional U.S. House seats. This legislative move follows calls from state leaders to counter Republican redistricting efforts across other regions.
### Democrats Target Redistricting Control The state Senate and state Assembly, both under Democratic control, passed a measure allowing lawmakers to sidestep an independent redistricting commission. This amendment would eliminate the current state ban on partisan gerrymandering. Democrats currently hold 19 of the 26 U.S. House seats in the state.
