Netflix Increases Prices for All US Subscription Plans
Netflix raised rates for its ad-supported, standard, and premium tiers today. The move comes as the company expands into live sports and new video podcasts.
Netflix, Inc. has implemented a broad price increase across all subscription tiers in the United States, marking a strategic shift as the company expands its content offerings into live sports and video podcasts. The price adjustments, effective immediately on the company's website, see the ad-supported tier rise to $8.99 per month from its previous $7.99. The standard subscription plan has increased by $2, bringing the monthly cost to $19.99. Meanwhile, the premium tier now carries a price tag of $26.99 per month, up from $24.99. Netflix has also adjusted the cost for adding extra members to an account, charging $7.99 for those on ad-supported plans and $9.99 for subscribers on ad-free plans. This move follows the 2023 decision to phase out the "basic" ad-free plan, which forced new and returning users toward either the ad-supported entry level or the more expensive standard and premium options. Analysts at TD Cowen estimate that these latest price hikes will contribute to a 6% year-over-year increase in average revenue per subscriber across the Canada and U.S. region by 2026. The streaming leader, which currently boasts a global subscriber base exceeding 325 million, reported robust financial results for the final quarter of last year. Revenue reached $12.1 billion for the October-December period, slightly ahead of market expectations. In the broader media landscape, Netflix recently declined to pursue an acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and studio assets. This withdrawal cleared the path for Paramount Skydance Corporation Class B Common Stock to proceed with a $110 billion acquisition of the historic Hollywood studio.
