A Moscow court held a closed-door hearing today, January 16, 2026, regarding a 235 billion US Dollar / Russian Ruble lawsuit filed by the central bank of Russia RURU against the Belgian clearing house Euroclear. Judge Anna Petrukhina anna petrukhina ruled that the legal action would proceed and rejected a motion by lawyers for Euroclear who argued the case should be dropped. After the ruling, the judge ordered all journalists to leave the courtroom and subsequently adjourned the proceedings until the spring.
The lawsuit, seeking 18.2 trillion US Dollar / Russian Ruble , was filed in Moscow last month as a response to an earlier European Union EUEU plan to use frozen Russian sovereign assets to back a loan for Ukraine UAUA. While the European Union EUEU later abandoned this plan due to legal concerns from member states like Belgium BEBE, the Russian central bank has continued its legal pursuit. The European Union EUEU has since decided to borrow money to provide a 90 billion Euro / Russian Ruble loan to Ukraine UAUA instead.
