Meloni proposes debt relief for African nations hit by climate disasters

Meloni offered African states debt suspension during climate disasters at a meeting in Addis Ababa. The move supports development via Italy's Mattei Plan.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced today that Italy ITIT is offering to allow African countries to suspend debt repayments when they are hit by extreme climate events. Speaking at the close of the second Italy–Africa meeting in Addis Ababa, the Italian government also launched a debt-conversion initiative tied to joint development projects. This announcement addresses the stated debt burden of the continent and seeks to link debt relief directly to climate-related shocks and development cooperation.
