McCormick and Sysco Announce Multi-Billion Dollar Mergers
McCormick and Sysco struck major acquisitions this week, marking a rare return of consumer megadeals. These moves reflect an industry push for growth via scale.
The consumer sector has seen a rare return of megadeals in the first quarter of 2026, highlighted by two massive acquisitions in the food industry. These transactions have broken into the global top 10 rankings, a feat not seen for consumer companies in over a decade, as businesses consolidate to navigate economic headwinds and shifting market tastes.
Leading the activity, MCCORMICK & CO-NON VTG SHRS announced a nearly $45 billion deal to acquire the food business of UNILEVER PLC, which is listed in the United Kingdom. This acquisition ranked as the second-largest global transaction of the quarter, following only the $50 billion investment by AMAZON.COM INC in OpenAI. Meanwhile, SYSCO CORP entered into a $29 billion agreement to purchase Jetro Restaurant Depot, marking the seventh-largest deal globally.
