The government of Malaysia has introduced emergency measures to combat supply disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict, as officials warn that domestic energy reserves may only last through the end of May. Economy Minister Akmal Nasir highlighted the urgency during a televised address, noting that while supplies for April and May are secured, the primary challenge lies in meeting demand from June onward. > While the government has assured stable supplies for April and May, the biggest challenge is how to meet energy supply needs from June onwards. To mitigate the impact, the central bank will offer support to businesses facing fuel shortages. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration between the government and state oil firm Petronas to diversify energy sources and strengthen international trade ties. Additionally, a special access pathway will be created to secure critical medical devices and pharmaceuticals. The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), which represents over 13,000 companies, reported that production in sectors such as food, chemicals, and consumer goods is already under threat from rising logistics costs and diesel shortages. According to an FMM survey, more than two-thirds of manufacturers expect raw material shortages within four weeks, with 8% holding less than two weeks of critical stock. Consequently, nearly half of these companies have reduced output, and 51.8% have reported shipment delays.
