Chinese Brands Challenge Global Pet Food Rivals
Domestic companies are outperforming Western rivals in China as pet owners seek fresh and affordable options. Sales reached record levels despite broader economic headwinds.
The pet food market in China has surged to a valuation of over $24 billion, driven by a significant shift in consumer preference toward domestic brands. Annual sales in the sector have grown sixfold between 2014 and 2024, emerging as a resilient pocket of growth within the world’s second-largest economy despite broader challenges like property market instability and stagnant wage growth.
Local manufacturers are increasingly outmaneuvering international rivals by offering fresher ingredients, diverse flavor profiles, and competitive pricing. This trend has attracted major domestic conglomerates from outside the traditional pet industry. For instance, the liquor giant KWEICHOW MOUTAI CO LTD-A recently announced plans to develop protein-based pet food from fermentation byproducts. Similarly, the pork producer WENS FOODSTUFF GROUP CO L-A acquired Qingdao Shuang’an Biotechnology Co, while WH GROUP LTD invested in Zhongyu Pet Food. Dairy leaders CHINA MENGNIU DAIRY CO and INNER MONGOLIA YILI INDUS-A, along with the pharmaceutical firm YUNNAN BAIYAO GROUP CO LTD-A, have also entered the fray with their own pet nutrition lines.
