Libya Tows Damaged Russian LNG Tanker from Zuwara Coast
Libya is towing a damaged Russian LNG tanker away from its coast to prevent environmental risks. Officials confirm there are no leaks from the vessel so far.
The coast guard in Libya has commenced operations to tow a damaged liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker that had been drifting unmanned for several weeks, according to the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU). The Russia-flagged vessel, Arctic Metagaz, was transporting cargo from Murmansk when it was reportedly struck by naval drones in early March. The tanker eventually drifted near the western port of Zuwara, prompting urgent safety concerns from neighboring countries.
The situation drew warnings from several Mediterranean nations, including Italy, France, and Spain, who petitioned the European Commission regarding the risk of a major ecological disaster. Despite these concerns, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) stated that no leaks have been detected and is coordinating with authorities in Malta to ensure safe navigation while the cargo is unloaded.
