Kenya has requested rapid financial support from the World Bank to help manage economic shocks stemming from the conflict in Iran. Central Bank Governor Kamau Thugge confirmed the request during the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington, explaining that the nation is currently struggling to maintain supplies of essential commodities like petrol while addressing inflationary pressures.

Like other nations heavily dependent on energy imports, the East African country is working to stave off shortages and manage cost increases that threaten the broader economy. Thugge noted that the request for rapid funding is a significant measure to ensure stability.

The request for rapid cash was significant.

The requested support is in addition to a budgetary support loan, known as development policy operations, which was already under discussion before the outbreak of the crisis. The World Bank's Rapid Response Support mechanism is designed to provide fast-disbursing financial aid and policy support to help countries respond quickly to sudden shocks.
