Japan Q4 GDP Revised Up to 1.3 Percent on Strong Investment
Japan revised Q4 GDP growth upward to 1.3 percent today due to strong capital spending. Middle East tensions and weak household data cloud the future outlook.
Japan revised its fourth-quarter economic growth significantly higher, buoyed by robust business investment, though escalating tensions in the Middle East present new risks to the outlook. Revised gross domestic product (GDP) data showed an annualized expansion of 1.3% for the final three months of 2025, a sharp increase from the initial 0.2% estimate and slightly above the 1.2% growth predicted by economists. The upward revision was primarily fueled by a 1.3% jump in capital expenditure, the strongest performance for the sector since the end of 2023. Private consumption, which represents over half of the national economy, also saw a modest upgrade to 0.3% growth. Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute, noted the significance of these figures. > "The double upward revisions made it clearer that Japans domestic demand-led economic growth is continuing." While domestic demand contributed 0.3 percentage points to the quarterly GDP, external demand remained neutral. However, recent data for January showed a 1.0% decline in household spending, suggesting potential headwinds for the current quarter. The ongoing conflict involving Iran remains a primary concern for policymakers. > "Japan should continue to see growth through January-March, but after April, if energy imports remain disrupted due to the Iran conflict, higher prices could hit consumption and companies may also pull back on capital investment," Minami added. To mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the government is considering measures to control gasoline prices. The Bank of Japan is maintaining its stance on potential interest rate increases, provided the economy stays on its recovery path, though Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasized the need for vigilance regarding global growth risks. Following these revisions, the nominal size of the economy reached 663.8 trillion yen. At current US Dollar / Japanese Yen exchange rates, this totals roughly $4.20 trillion. This figure keeps the nation positioned ahead of India, which has yet to cross the $4 trillion threshold despite its rapid ascent in global economic rankings.
