Japan Mitsui close to acquiring stake in major Qatar LNG expansion

Japanese trading house Mitsui is in advanced talks to join the North Field South project. The move aims to secure stable energy for Japan amid rising demand.

洞察:
Mitsui & Co., Ltd. is reported to be close to purchasing an equity stake in the North Field South phase of the North Field project expansion in Qatar QAQA. The transaction, which is currently under discussion, would secure additional liquefied natural gas supply for Japan JPJP and increase the weighting of Qatar QAQA in the energy portfolio of Japan JPJP. This development comes as talks reach an advanced stage regarding the second phase of the massive expansion led by QatarEnergy.
The North Field South phase is a major undertaking with an estimated cost of approximately $17.5 billion. It is designed to add 16 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to the overall output of the North Field project, which is recognized as the largest liquefied natural gas expansion in the world. The broader expansion initiative is expected to raise the total production capacity of QatarEnergy from 77 mtpa to 126 mtpa by 2027.
