Japan exports surge by most in three years as Lunar New Year demand peaks

Japan JPJP recorded a 16.8% year-on-year increase in exports for January, marking the largest monthly rise since November 2022. This surge was primarily driven by the Japanese export sector front-loading shipments ahead of the Lunar New Year in China CNCN. The timing and scale of this jump materially altered the monthly trade outcome, contributing to a January trade deficit of 1.15 trillion yen, a figure that narrowed what had been expected by some analysts to be a larger deficit.
