Ivory Coast weighs cocoa price cuts to align with Ghana as global markets slump
Ivory Coast is weighing cocoa price cuts to match Ghana after global prices fell by half. Officials say the move is now vital for the sector's survival.
The Government of Ivory Coast
CI is considering a reduction in the guaranteed farm-gate price paid to cocoa farmers to align with a recent cut implemented by the Government of Ghana
GH. This policy adjustment is currently under discussion as the two nations navigate a sharp fall in global cocoa prices. The move is significant because coordinated price actions between these neighbors affect overall sector stability and farmer incomes.
The primary trigger for the debate is the decision by the Government of Ghana to lower its farm-gate price by 28.6% for the remainder of the 2025/2026 main crop. This reduction, already implemented by Ghana COCOBOD, comes as global cocoa prices have fallen nearly 50% in recent months. Together, Ivory Coast and Ghana account for about 60% of global cocoa output, making their unified pricing strategy a focal point for the international market.
