Italy may withdraw from the EU's SAFE defense scheme unless it receives budget leeway for more than 30 billion euros ($34.90 billion) in energy spending, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said. She requested the European Commission extend deficit exemptions currently reserved for military investment to include extraordinary energy crisis measures. The move threatens Italy's goal to bring its budget deficit below the 3% GDP ceiling during the current year.
